    Thanks all for your feedback

I would like to ask some questions regarding the usage of Attachment filtering.

    - Do you have Notify Local Recipient enabled? This way intended recipients are notified?
    - Do you have Notify Local Administrator enabled? This way the administrator can receive an email and easily approve?
    - Are such exclusions intended for specific recipients or external recipients? Eg you can already exclude internal recipients from rules.
    - What type of attachments are these? Zip Files? Office Files? PDF files?

Ian BugejaAdminIan Bugeja (Director, Product Management, GFI) commented  ·

The main reason why this has never been implemented is that email addresses can be easily be spoofed.

Any person can easily send an email pretending to be somebody else. Although there are ways to be able to determine if the email is legitimate or not, this does not depend on your configuration but on the sender's configuration eg SPF records, Domain Keys etc.

I do understand that organisations have business partners and they went to quickly receive communications from them easily without having quarantine issues etc. However if the business partner network or email system gets compromised, then this could potentially compromise your own system.

We will investigate how we can alleviate this problem.

    This is already possible.

Different roles are available in the Central Management Server.

Each Administrator needs to have his own LanGuard instance that he manages, applies and approves patches, reporting is pushed to the central server for a unified view.

Ian BugejaAdminIan Bugeja (Director, Product Management, GFI) commented  ·

    Hi

Yes the central server is only for reporting purposes.

My only suggestion in your scenario is to install multiple GFI LanGuard instances. Your license allows you to do so.

    Hi

Both Windows Server 2016 and Windows 10 are supported by the latest version of GFI LanGuard 12.1

If you are experiencing any form of issue we suggest to open a support case with GFI Support.

    Hi

Could you elaborate a bit on this please? Does this mean that if memory is exhausted SpamTag fails?

This is only possible if the Domain Member server would have emails flowing through it, ie it either needs IIS or a Microsoft Exchange role installed on it.

Routing of emails would be external from the machine, thus that would need to be configured externally of the domain member server.

For such a deployment we highly suggest to use SQL server. SQL Express has other limitations including the CPU affinity and scale which could effect performance.

In GFI LanGuard 12.1 which is the latest version released in February 2017 we added a new feature that will reboot the machines only if required.

Are you running on the latest version?

You can simply select this option and from my understanding this should address the feature that is concerning you.

In GFI MailEssentials v20.2 available on insider.gfi.com, we are proposing a new change to the macro blocking

    1) Block Malicious Macros
    2) Block All Macros

The Block Malicious Macros setting should be a valuable setting to block anything malicious and keep the company protection.
Various techniques are employed from the different AV vendors to detect malicious macros, including heuristics and definitions.

Ian BugejaAdminIan Bugeja (Director, Product Management, GFI) commented  ·

    Hi

If this is the case we suggest to disable the Macro blocking check. This setting is there to block all emails which have attachment with Macros.

We are against a whitelist for any malware feature since adding a whitelist is a breach of security policies due to the fact that email addresses can be easily spoofed.

Please note that any Malicious attachments are still blocked (also by Bitdefender), and also if you additional AV engines such as Avira, Kaspersky or McAfee (Intel Security)

    Hi

We are looking at enhancements in supporting better DKIM and other forms of signed email to verify the authenticity of such messages. Such frameworks are there to identify the message authenticity, but can still lead to malicious and spammy emails to be sent. GFI MailEssentials cannot simply let through an email which is signed and authenticated with such forms of authenticity.

As for GFI MailEssentials being updated, yes it is and we plan to have the next version released in January 2017.

GFI MailEssentials spam/malware prevention is not enhanced with new builds but also in the daily updates that are essential to the product functionality as well as the automatic patches introducing minor enhancements and fixes. Such daily updates are there to keep your email stream secure.

    Hi

A pptx file is merely a zip file compressed to contain the different media and files. The most probable case is that in your example the pptx file contains more than 2000 files thus it's being blocked. If I'm incorrect in this statement please open a ticket with GFI Support and provide a sample which is causing the issue.

What I can suggest is to utilise the Exclusion in the Scan Within Archives option (found in Decompression Engine) and make sure that pptx is added to the list.

Please note that such files will still be scanned with the AV engines however they will not be processed as single individual files.

    Regards
    Ian

GFI MailEssentials logs all events to the Windows Event log.

Any SIEM software can monitor the windows event log making important possible.

Email logs would be a drastic approach due to the amount of data involved, however any email failure for example would be logged in the windows event log making alerting of any issues possible.

If you go to Quarantine options…Malware options there is Audit options

Enabling this feature will log all approvals/deletes on the server to file.

    Hi

We have checked all silverlight patches in the LanGuard database and all do have the correct parameters as you suggested.

What OS did you experience this on please? And also what are you regional settings.

    Thanks for your feedback.

Does not it make sense to give this person administration rights on the Quarantine, so that he can instantly approve the emails that he deems as false positives?

    Hi

This should be possible to detect and block to quarantine using the Advanced Content Filtering.

You would need to create an regex expression which matches the filename

    Hi

You can search for similar emails and be able to provide bulk actions on them from the quarantine search feature in GFI MailEssentials.
